Why Is My Product Name Showing Twice?

Written by Jessica Festa

If a product name appears twice on your order forms or in Rentopian, it is usually caused by a small difference between the product name and the variant name.

This is the intending functionality of the system, but can cause confusion on products where there is only one variant.

Why This Happens

Rentopian shows both the product name and the variant name by default when they are different.

This is helpful for products with multiple variants.

Example:

  • Product Name: Folding Chair

  • Variant Names: White, Black

  • On documents displays: Folding Chair Black or Folding Chair White

In that case, showing both names helps identify the correct version of the product.

What Causes the Duplicate Appearance?

Even very small differences between the product name and variant name will make the system display both.

Examples include:

  • Extra spaces

  • Dashes

  • Periods

  • Quotation marks

  • Capitalization differences

Example:

  • Product Name: 30" Misting Fan

  • Variant Name: 30 Misting Fan

Because the quotation marks are present in one and not the other, the system treats them as different names.

How to Fix It

  • Open the product.

  • Edit either the product name or the variant name, depending on which you prefer to use.

  • Make sure both names match exactly.

The easiest method is usually to copy the name you want to use and then paste directly into the name field you're replacing to ensure there is an exact character for character match.

After Updating the Names

Once the names match exactly:

  • The duplicate display will be removed

  • Your documents will display correctly

  • Your transaction view will look cleaner

Important Note

This behavior is normal and helps distinguish products with multiple variants.

If you intentionally use different variant names, the system will continue showing both names.
