Sets vs Add-Ons: When to Use Each

Written by Jessica Festa
Updated today

Sets and Add-Ons help you group items together, but they are used in different ways.

This guide will help you choose the right option for your inventory.

Quick Difference

  • Set = A group of items that create one product

  • Add-On = Extra items added to an existing product

What Is a Set?

A set is used when a product is made up of multiple pieces.

The main item does not exist on its own.

Example: A tent

  • The tent is made from many parts

  • Pole, top, stakes, and other pieces

  • All parts are needed to build the tent

Using a set ensures:

  • All required pieces are included

  • Correct quantities are used

  • Your team has everything needed

What Is a Product with Add-Ons?

A product with add-ons is a main item with extra pieces.

The main item exists on its own.

Example: A sofa

  • The sofa exists by itself

  • Cushions and pillows are added to it

Using add-ons lets you:

  • Attach extra items to a product

  • Keep items separate but connected

  • Control how items are shown

How They Display to Customers

Both sets and add-ons can be simplified for customers.

Customers usually see only the main item.

  • Set: You can hide all components from quotes and orders

  • Add-Ons: You can mark items as Hide on Print

This keeps the order clean and easy to read.

How They Display to Your Team

Your team still sees all items when preparing orders.

Sets

  • The set acts like a header

  • No checkbox for the set itself

  • Team pulls each individual component

Add-Ons

  • Each item has its own checkbox

  • Team pulls each item separately

When Should I Use a Set?

  • The product is made of multiple required parts

  • The item cannot exist on its own

  • You need to track all pieces together

Common examples:

  • Tents

  • Stage setups

  • Large equipment builds

When Should I Use Add-Ons?

  • The main product exists on its own

  • You need to include extra items with it

  • The extras are separate physical items

Common examples:

  • Sofas with cushions

  • Chairs with covers

  • Tables with linens

Best Practice Tip

Ask yourself:

β€œDoes this item exist on its own?”

  • If no β†’ Use a Set

  • If yes β†’ Use Add-Ons
